Life was not normal in so many ways, but the Cismigiu family made it so. The father wanted freedom for his family, but he had to struggle for a chance of obtaining it. Somethings are well worth the fight.

This true story, THE TOMATO SMUGGLER, is a son’s tribute that exposes the reality of living under Ceauşescu’s communism in 1980s rural Romania through the eyes of young Nicolae Cismigiu as he grows up. The story evokes compassion and anger as Nicolae narrates heartrending realities, watching his courageous and self-reliant father, Cuţa, refuse to submit to torture and the inherent evil of communism and its failed philosophy that turned against him his former friends and neighbors. Communism robbed freedom, so Cuţa led the family to subtle and overt resistance to retain their dignity.
